The proper construction of a vertical ground loop requires specialty equipment and procedures. The drilled hole itself if quite similar to a water producing well. The installation of the pipe requires heat fusion equipment for all joints. After the pipe is inserted into the well, the annular, or left over space has to be filled with a high solids bentonite grout from the bottom up. At the top of the well, the casing need to be cut below grade, and the lateral run-ins connected using heat fusion 90’s. All this occurs about 4′ below grade. After completion, a pressure test is applied to the system, and it needs to hold 100 psi for 24 hours. Often, the local building official will want to sign off on the pressure test. Given the items required that are outside of the normal activity for water well installation, we feel more comfortable using experienced loop contractors for our verticals. Here are three:
